A growing home for a timeless sport

Sumo Scotland is the recognised governing body for sumo in Scotland, operating under British Sumo and, through it, the European Sumo Federation (EFS) and the International Sumo Federation (ISF).

For a long time, sumo in the UK was misunderstood — treated as a novelty rather than the disciplined, centuries-old martial art it truly is. That’s changed. Across Scotland, a new generation of athletes, coaches and volunteers has built something organised, ambitious and genuinely welcoming, and Scottish sumo now plays a leading role in the sport’s revival across the UK.

What we do

  1. Support clubs in developing safe, well-run training and a strong community
  2. Develop coaches and officials to nationally recognised standards
  3. Run and support competitions, including the world-renowned Scottish Sumo Open
  4. Build pathways for athletes from their first session to national and international competition
  5. Grow participation among juniors, women and newcomers right across the country

The Scottish Sumo Open

Founded by Scott Findlay, the Scottish Sumo Open has grown into one of the largest independent sumo tournaments in Europe, drawing competitors and nations from around the world to Scotland each year. It’s a flagship event for the sport — and a powerful symbol of how far Scottish sumo has come.

Sumo is for everyone

You don’t need to be a particular age, size or shape to do sumo. You don’t need experience, and you don’t need to compete. Whether you’re looking for fitness, focus, competition or community, there’s a place for you in a Scottish sumo club.

Come and try it. You might surprise yourself.
