Scotland is home to two clubs offering regular sumo training, east and west. Both welcome complete beginners and seasoned competitors alike.

Clan Sumo

Coach – Scott Findlay Location – Coatbridge

Founded in 2022 and led by Master Coach Scott Findlay, Clan Sumo is a cornerstone of sumo in Scotland and the wider UK. A multi-time British and Scottish champion and former international competitor for Team GB, Scott is widely credited with introducing the sport to Scotland and driving its growth across all four nations.

Scott founded the Scottish Sumo Open, now one of the biggest sumo competitions in the world, and oversees the development of the sport across the south and central belt of Scotland. Clan Sumo is home to many of the UK’s top athletes and champions, but it prides itself just as much on its family atmosphere and strong community spirit — a place where elite training and a genuine love of the sport go hand in hand.

Edinburgh Sumo Club

Coach – Ian Burgess Location – Edinburgh

Founded in 2025 by Ian Burgess, Edinburgh Sumo Club is one of the UK’s fastest-growing sumo clubs. Based in the heart of Scotland’s capital, the club sits at the centre of a vibrant and diverse community, connecting people from all walks of life and creating an inclusive environment where sumo can genuinely thrive.

Ian is an experienced martial artist with decades of training and international competition experience for both Britain and Scotland. He oversees the growth of the sport across the east of Scotland, balancing a deep respect for sumo’s tradition and culture with a practical, modern approach to coaching. Still in its early days, Edinburgh Sumo Club is building real momentum and a lasting place in the UK sumo scene.
